Concept and Interpretation
Through information (or evidences) from 'Miniature' work types I found that to get into the world of miniature form of art, music or objects we are considering at least one of these three dimensions which are the realm of time (duration), space (size and scale) and density (detail and denseness).
2. To convert these three concepts of miniature (Time Space and Density) to the Recital
The definition of 'miniature music' is a piece in short duration. It works with the concept of time (short period) but remain beauty and their own meaning which are Nocturne by L.Boulanger and the Suite de Ballet by R.V.Williams in this program.
The concept of time that mentioned above is only one of three perspectives to get into miniature ideas. Rather than playing only music in miniature type, it would be more interesting to present the rest. Then how?
Thinking about a 'miniature', the first thing that pops up in our mind is an object in small size. This is where the concept of space belongs to. Due to that fact that 'space' is about sizing and scaling. To examine this concept I decided to choose a large scale work which is Ballade for flute and orchestra by C.Reinecke that reduced to only solo flute with a piano on the stage to represent smaller usage of space and sound than the original work. Before performing a Ballade I compose one prelude, originally is a short piece in the same key as the main piece to let the audience be familiar with the harmony, in miniature style with materials from the Ballade to prepare audiences before start.
E.Varèse's density 21.5 is a piece that makes us concern about ideas of mass and density in music, it is composed by the idea of sound masses, a term that signifies techniques of composition to cut the value of individual pitches, to
shape the movement and effect of timbre, texture and dynamics, and to cast a shadow between sound and noise and recognize both of it as sound. To be more specific this piece composed by changing density of platinum (21.5 gram per cubic centimetre) to a solo piece for flute. Still the piece is all about 'Density' but not exactly a miniature, so I decided to compose a piece called 'mass poem' based on the same idea as Density 21.5 but in miniature duration to play in a recital transition.
In short, these three concepts are based on my own analysis and interpretation on perception of miniature art, music and object. If you discover that they are different or not pleasurable from your perspective, it's totally fine just attempt to appreciate only the music itself.
